An artist reception for Angela Behrends’ “Most Perfect Circle” show was held Tuesday at the Dakota State University Karl E. Mundt Library gallery.
Behrends’ display included several pieces done by local residents.
Participants in the art project included Madison second- and seventh-graders, DSU students, Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home residents and other community members. She asked them to work with the shape of a circle and to embellish it in a way that makes it the creator’s own perfect circle.
Behrends chose to work with the circle shape because of its simplicity and it would be an easy shape for anyone to use. She sees the circle as a representative of the individual and, when grouped with others, as part of a community.
Behrends hopes the “Most Perfect Circle” project will bring more community interest and visits to the DSU gallery. In her statement at the reception, Behrends said the “Most Perfect Circle” project has to do with “encouraging people to express themselves and participate in making art, looking at art, talking about art and thinking about art.”
Behrends’ own works in the show include the use of mediums such as graphite and paint on canvas or paper.
The DSU gallery is open to the public during regular library hours, which are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
