Three award-winning area artists will be featured at this month’s Madison Area Arts Council art show.

The works of Allyson Nagel, Thomas M. Jones and Lisa Shoemaker will be displayed as part of the Double Header on June 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at The BrickHouse Community Arts Center. This event is a one-night art show and is free and open to the public. Refreshments are served. The BrickHouse is located at 106 SE 2nd St. in Madison.

Nagel describes herself as a self-taught artist. She has worked with porcelain for 30 years and operates from her studio in her Madison home. Nagel is known internationally for her “whimsical” egg character sculptures.

“I want my art to be fun…. for me and everyone who views it,” Nagel said. “It’s all about the kid in all of us!”

Nagel painted the White House Easter Egg for the State of South Dakota from 2003 to 2007. She spent seven years designing for the Chicago giftware corporation Roman, Inc. Nagel earned the status of Master Artisan during the 20 years she was involved with the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.

Jones is another Madison resident whose work will be on display at the Double Header art show.

Jones is a fine arts photographer and painter. For the past 10 years, Jones has worked as a Digital Art and Design professor at Dakota State University and heads the photography program. He has had an interest in photography since he was given a Kodak 110 camera when he was eight years old.

Jones often incorporates a door into his photographs and paintings.

“I have always liked the idea of a door,” Jones said. “It will open on a flat surface and will allow you to go through and interact with a three-dimensional environment.”

He keeps an old door in the back of his truck to use when he passes a scene that inspires him.

“In some of my earlier paintings, I would use a door or just the door knob and key hole to give the viewer an opportunity to move on or keep them locked into the painting. This idea carried on into this photographic series.”

Shoemaker has lived in South Dakota for 16 years and paints from her Colman studio. She works with watercolor and oils. Prior to living in South Dakota, Shoemaker spent time as a medical and scientific illustrator.

Shoemaker received a South Dakota Artist Grant in 2002. Her painting “Badlands” was included in the 2008-2009 South Dakota Governor’s Biennial traveling exhibit. Another painting, called “Drop Off,” was part of the Italian Artrom Gallery on-line exhibit “New Landscapes 2007.”

MAAC meetings are held the first Thursday of every month. June’s meeting will take place at Prairie Village at 7 p.m.
