Category Archives: Third Place Nights

So what exactly is a ‘Third Place’ afterall?

We started Third Place Nights this past April as a way to engage our local neighborhood artists and creative-minds through a monthly community gathering. It’s an amazing opportunity to connect, create, converse, otherwise share in the passion of others, all while having a great time too, and we like that part, a lot.

We’ve been asked quite a bit about the naming of Third Place Nights, and what exactly a Third Place is, so here’s a bit more about this global movement. Our council has seemingly been focused on global movements recently, like our recent White Night festival and Third Places, as we continue to take the lead as both a community voice and cultural advocate.

The third place is a term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace. In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg (1989, 1991) argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place.

Oldenburg calls one’s “first place” the home and those that one lives with. The “second place” is the workplace — where people may actually spend most of their time. Third places, then, are “anchors” of community life and facilitate and foster broader, more creative interaction. All societies already have informal meeting places; what is new in modern times is the intentionality of seeking them out as vital to current societal needs. Oldenburg suggests these hallmarks of a true “third place”: free or inexpensive; food and drink, while not essential, are important; highly accessible: proximate for many (walking distance); involve regulars – those who habitually congregate there; welcoming and comfortable; both new friends and old should be found there.

We’ve made great commitments this past year to support completely free & open programming offerings, and Third Place Nights is yet another example of what we can do together, as a unified and proactive community.

So, all you need to do is join in, make some noise, and we’ll look forward to seeing you all at the next Third Place Nights, Wednesday, July 21st, from 7-9pm, at the ever accessible and walkable, The BrickHouse Community Arts Center.

Join us for another round…

Hoo-ray! Third Place Nights is here once again, this Wednesday from 7-9 pm, at The BrickHouse.

Third Place Nights is our ever-popular free & open exchange of ideas, conversation, and art, and everyone is welcome to join in. Be sure to bring along a sketchbook, or something that makes you wanna create, it’s essentially wide-open, for the most part.

We’re even going to bring out one of our cool new fresh blue shelters, so if you haven’t painted outside in the shade of The BrickHouse, this is your best chance yet.

We’ve even heard rumors of treats, and we can be swayed as to variety, feel free to comment below for your favorite!

We’ve got it all the programming you’d ever want, now we need you!

Question: When was the last time you were at one of our great free & open programming events?

Answer: Well we can’t answer that, only you can, but we can say we’ve been missing quite a few of you, our friends, supporters, and artsy misfits. We’re proud to offer the kind of programming that we do, from the incredible Chautauqua Series and White Night festival, to the creative junction that is Third Place Nights, and The BrickHouse, we love it all.

However, great programs need great folks, like you, and your neighbor too. We’ve been working towards building an audience, and that takes a few brave souls, much like yourself, to take a chance, and give in to the urge to be part of your community. It’s fun, it’s easy, it’s what we need from all of you more than ever.

We realize that time is always in shortage, but community only happens when we make time for it, and leave our reasons and justifications in the past. This is our moment, the time is now, to make the most out of the opportunity that we have, and embrace the spirit, the passion, the creative drive that makes us great, so join us, and let’s make special happen!

3rd Place Nights kicks-off!

Third Place Nights kicked-off for the first time ever, last night at The BrickHouse Community Arts Center, here in Madison. There was a lot of great conversation, and even some created a few fresh pieces of art, a good time was had by all!

The next Third Place Nights will be May 19th, from 7-9 pm, and they’re always the third Wednesday of the month at The BrickHouse. Be sure to bring a few supplies, materials, or what-ever it is you need to make art happen!

We’ll provide the cookies, you provide the spirit, and together, we’ll make great things happen!

Third Place Nights is Wednesday!

Third Place Nights is your best opportunity to be part of your local creative community, and make great art happen too, all while working with others who share the same passion to create and converse.

Painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, writers, poets, bloggers, musicians, knitters, beaders, and radicals of any kind are encouraged to join our growing community to work, share, and yes, laugh and otherwise enjoy the company of others. We’ll be taking over The BrickHouse Community Arts Center, which gives us all sorts of space to create and to otherwise inspire great works of art, or at least a good conversation!

A few simple rules for everyone to follow, no aerosols, no noxious fumes, no hazardous chemicals, and no wet clay, essentially we must all be nice to our fellow artists and to our facility as well. Sketchbooks are encouraged, along with journals, laptops, cameras, guitars, anything that inspires you to create and share!

Everyone is welcomed, and encouraged to participate, from professionals, to college students, to aspiring artists. Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, feel free to join us, and share yourself with your community!

We’ll be meeting at The BrickHouse Community Arts Center, on Wednesday April 21st, from 7 – 9 pm.

We’ll look forward to seeing you there, I’ve heard a rumor of free cookies too!

A lot of opportunities for you…

Over this coming week, we have two really great opportunities for you, our local community member, to enjoy and take part!

  1. Come enjoy the sounds of a children’s’ handbell choir, as our ongoing Chautauqua Series features Julie Gehrels and the St Peter’s Lutheran Church Handbell Choir of Wentworth on Saturday, April 17th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Madison Public Library Community Room. This event, as with all of our Chautauqua Series programs, is free & open to the public, and refreshments will be served. What a great way to start-off your weekend!
  2. Looking to create art, great conversation, and meet some new friends, then look no further as Third Place Nights kicks off on Wednesday, April 21st, from 7-9 p.m. at The BrickHouse Community Arts Center, located at 106 SE 2nd St, in downtown Madison. We’ll be making  ‘Art happen’, as we work together to build a vibrant arts community, though this innovative open-studio approach. Everyone is welcome, from writers to poets, from musicians to bloggers, from beaders to knitters, from painters to sculptors, we’ll make it happen, all at The BrickHouse!

Third Place Nights…

We’re launching our newest programming effort in the coming weeks, Third Place Nights, which will be a free & open, monthly open-studio evening, for artists of all kinds, all mediums, and all walks of life!

Everyone is welcomed, and encouraged to participate, from professionals, to college students, to aspiring artists. Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, feel free to join us, and share yourself with your community!

The first Third Place Nights will be held on April 21st, from 7-9 pm, and in the future will be held on the third Wednesday of each month (does that seem to make a little more sense?)

We’ll look forward to seeing you all at Third Place Nights!

A Fresh Start for Madison…

We, the Madison Area Arts Council, have been actively promoting our community for many years, actually decades, fostering the Arts & Cultural opportunities that makes Madison special to so many of us.

I’m often reminded of our past efforts, the Joffrey Ballet, the Guthrie Theatre, and of course our past Firehouse Gallery, I can never go a week without hearing of these past events. The passion, the excitement that is shared, these moments that we’ve all had, are incredibly special, and important to building and creating a vibrant community. We are all fortunate that we have been able to be some part of our organizations history and programming.

Over 4o years of history, rumors always persist that we are in fact the oldest active Arts Council in South Dakota, we continue to grow, change, and that’s great. Over this past year, this council has been incredibly active, with a renewed mission and focus on community-accessible and community-oriented programing, which is free & open for everyone. Few organizations pride themselves on being free & open, programming is never free after all, yet we are completely believing that you, our fellow community member, will continue to support our efforts.

Our monthly Chautauqua Series, which has been ongoing since July of last year, continues to grow and develop, and is always a surprise to see what happens. We’ve been featuring local, regional, and even nationally known artists, sharing themselves, through free & open workshops, demonstrations, presentations, and even performances. If you have not had the opportunity to be part of the Chautauqua Series programs, then there is no better time than now.

Our newest venture, is the resurrection of our Community Arts Center, which will become the home for all of our programing, and a treasure for many years to come. We’ve had a tough go as of late, but we remain committed to making this happen, and we’ll never back away from this effort, no matter the difficulties. We’ll be featuring open-studio workshops, arts education, artist showcases, beyond the fact that we essentially operate the organization from this new home. A lot of announcements will be coming in the next several weeks, including a new name, so here’s your opportunity to be part of some bigger than all of us, and be part of your community!

We’ve been passionate, we’ve often been loud, but we remain committed to being your voice and advocate for the Arts & Culture here within the Madison Area and beyond. Now, more than ever, we need you, join us, stand with us, let’s make some noise, and together, we’ll continue to grow!

Just a reminder, our website continues to grow and develop, be sure to follow us, add your comments, pictures, videos, links, there’s a lot to do!
